Transportation

I have never been in a noisier place than Mexico. Last night we could hear no less than four horns blowing at the same time, three transit police with whistles, and ambulances. Even with ear plugs in you could hear the noise. They have a code when blowing the horn, for example one horn with blow three short beeps which means F off, the other horn will answer F you. Then there is the get out of my way horn blowing. I'm going to enjoy our house by the water on PEI.

We took the subway around Mexico city yesterday. Here are some stats that will startle you. There are 15 lines of subway tracks. The trains come every 6-7 minutes and have 10 cars per train. They move 5 million people per day on the subway alone. There are two levels of subway underground. And....you can go anywhere you want for 3 pecos which is about 12 cents Canadian. When we were on the subway first it was 11:30 am and there was only standing room. Ernesto said it gets a lot busier at rush hour. There are people who get on the subway and walk up and down the aisles selling stuff.

When we were downtown, there was a market where people had blankets laid out and you could buy just about anything. There were more than 50 places to buy things and every single one of them was yelling to buy from them. Was it ever noisy. You can buy absolutely anything on the street

One thing we will say is that not once have we ever felt in danger in Mexico. The places we have been have been as safe as any large city in North America. No one has approached us or made us feel scared. Mind you, we didn't go out alone at night, didn't drink at bars, and were always aware of our surrounding. But if I were in New York City or Los Angeles I be just as careful. People have been very kind to us.
